How to get Dressed

I know, I know, we’ve all been getting dressed ourselves for quite some time now. But it’s interesting to think about how we decide what to wear in the morning.

Do you reach for the same old thing day in day out? The comfy jeans, the comfy sweatshirt, the same old trainers and coat or even just what you wore yesterday (if it’s still clean of course) or a version of the same? Or the skinny jeans and a nice top for going out? There’s nothing wrong with this of course, but you might not be feeling as good as you could! If you just switched it up a bit and chose something you haven’t worn for a while or wore your skinny jeans and nice top for the school run - or that dress you haven’t worn in a while.

Everyone is different, some are more analytical than others and some of us don’t really have time to think about it. Some of us are planners and decide what to wear for the whole week on a Sunday (I salute you!), and some of us are mood dressers who need options and change our minds daily and throw what we don’t want to wear on the floor/bannister/chair (guilty as charged). But whatever kind of dresser you are, it’s good to have some sort of a plan.

There are a few things to consider when deciding on an outfit, and I highly recommend planning it at least the night before - even ironing or steaming it so it’s literally ready to throw on in the morning without a thought. Some people also like to plan for the whole week, and that’s why I’ve created a free weekly outfit printable planner.

There are really only two key things to think about:

  1. The weather - just check the weather the night before because you don’t want to get caught out in suede boots in the pouring rain.

  2. Your day - what your day is going to be like and who you’re going to see and how much walking you’ll be doing. And even if you are working from home or doing the cleaning, it’s still worth getting dressed properly. It will make you feel SO much better and you’ll be more productive (trust me) and you’ll probably want to go out and run those errands you’ve been putting off too.

Depending on your personality, you will probably have a different approach to how you think about getting dressed. You may just fancy wearing a particular item or accessory, so build your outfit around that. You may start with the basics you know work and try and add a little flair afterwards. Or maybe you’d like to use Pinterest - I have had great success typing in the one particular item I want to wear and see what it comes up with. Simples! Sometimes it’s good to dress from the shoes up - weather, the amount of walking you have to do are pretty important things.

And it’s always good to add accessories… because accessorising completely lifts and changes an outfit. For more information about accessorising AND more about what makes up a good outfit, download my free guide to accessories by clicking here.

Whatever your approach, once you’re dressed, I highly recommend you take a look at yourself in a FULL LENGTH MIRROR - if you don’t have one, get one! And also start taking OUTFIT SELFIES every day - it really helps you to judge your outfit rather than your wobbly bits (I’m not saying you have wobbly bits, but we all see our flaws in the mirror and we don’t see the outfit)! Plus when you have a library of outfits, you can go back and gain inspiration. I do this a lot and look back at things I’ve enjoyed wearing and felt good in when I’m stuck for what to wear. I also get really embarrassed if my phone ever gets handed around friends though!

So if you’d like to try outfit planning, you don’t need anything more than a pen and paper! Let me know how you get on with planning your outfits!
